Pen Bay Surgery
The physicians of Pen Bay Surgery offer expertise in the areas of breast, colon, hernia, gallbladder, esophageal, thyroid, varicose vein surgery as well as endoscopy, pacemakers, surgical treatment of GERD and excision of skin lesions. Pen Bay Surgery Staff Julie White, MD, specializes in peripheral vascular surgery, which involves taking care of the all the blood vessels outside of the heart, including the carotid arteries leading from the heart to the brain, arteries in the abdomen, feet, and legs, and arteries leading to such internal organs as the kidneys. She is the director of both the Wound Healing Center and the Vascular Services Lab at Pen Bay. The Wound Healing Center is where patients are sent for management of their wounds by a physician and a certified wound-care nurse. The Vascular Services Lab offers non-invasive testing to look at different arteries and veins and how well they function. Specialized ultrasound equipment screens for carotid artery disease so that it can be treated before it causes a stroke. Gordon Paine, MD, is a general surgeon with Pen Bay Surgery. General surgery includes surgery of the abdominal cavity, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, cancer-related skin and soft tissue surgery, gallbladder surgery and hernia surgery. Pen Bay Surgery physicians also perform laparoscopic and vascular surgeries. In laparoscopic procedures, a surgeon makes several small incisions rather than one large incision during surgery. Generally, laparoscopic surgery is less invasive, results in shorter hospital stays, causes less pain, and allows quicker recovery at home.
Timothy O'Brien, MD, is also a general surgeon with the practice. In additional to traditional surgical procedures, he performs laparoscopic surgery for a variety of medical conditions, including benign and malignant breast diagnoses, hernia surgery and surgery of the GI tract. Dr. O’Brien completed his residency in General Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital in 1997, followed by a Gastrointestinal Surgical Research Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 1999. Dr. O’Brien previously served on the Active Staff at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., and at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville. Dr. O’Brien is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Cristan Anderson, MD, is also a general surgeon, who performs laparoscopic surgery, gallbladder, colon and hernia surgeries in addition to breast surgeries. In breast surgery, she approaches patient care in a multidisciplinary fashion. She interacts with the primary care doctor, the oncologist, the pathologist and the radiologist to figure out the best care plan for the individual patient. She works with the other members of the multidisciplinary tumor boards established to formulate care plans for cancer patients. Dr. Anderson has just completed a master's degree in public health.
Catherine Crochetiere, NP, sees her own patients, assists at surgery, makes rounds, and does skin cancer screenings. PEN BAY SURGERY
