Pen Bay Medical Center has been involved in clinical research since the 1980’s. In 2008 the clinical research department was established. In 2013, Pen Bay became an affiliate of Eastern Maine Medical Center Cancer Care for the purposes of our patients having access to a variety of National Cancer Institute research studies right here in Rockport. The department is currently coordinating clinical research in a variety of areas.

If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, you may be eligible to participate in a research study at Pen Bay Medical Center.  By participating in a research study, you may be able to gain access to new treatments and medications before they are widely available. 

Testing, medications and clinic visits may be provided free of charge.

About the Department
The Clinical Research Department oversees medication and device trials at Pen Bay Medical Center. Through clinical research, physician-investigators translate laboratory discoveries into better treatments, therapies and interventions to improve the nation's health.

The department consists of two staff, Caroline Knight, RN, CCRP, Clinical Research Specialist, and Tara Murray, RN, clinical research coordinator. The department's medical director is Dr. Robert Stein, neurologist.

Patients do not need a referral but should always feel free to ask their physician whether participation in a clinical study is appropriate for them.
