School Children Spearhead Support for Cancer Care

Leah Wilcox (left) and Talia Willis (right), 6th grade students at Warren Community School (WCS) were concerned about families in their community they knew who were impacted by cancer. So with the support of their teachers, administrators, friends and families, they spearheaded a project to raise money for cancer patients.

Leah and Talia proposed a "Fun Week." For fifty cents, students could participate in themed days: Sports Day, Twin Day, Hawaiian Day, Mismatch Day, and Pink Day. Each morning, Talia and Leah went around to classrooms to collect money from participating students, then counted and rolled the coins. Their goal was to reach $500 in one week, but with the help of a matching fund up to $1000 by an anonymous donor, within two weeks, the two girls had surpassed their goal!

Leah and Talia chose two organizations to support throughout WCS Fun Week: The Pen Bay Cancer Care Center and Miles of Hope Cancer Transport. Pen Bay Cancer Care Center gratefully acknowledges Talia and Leah's efforts in support of cancer care and their $250 donation.
