Pen Bay Medical Center has achieved Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission, an independent overseer of medical care quality. This certificate of distinction, represented by the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, signals to the community that the care given to stroke patients at Pen Bay meets the highest national standards. Dr. Martyn Vickers receives international honor
A member of the Pen Bay Urology team, Dr. Martyn Vickers has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Sexual Medicine Society of North America at their annual meeting in Toronto, Ontario.
Dr. Vickers, a Maine native, was cited for his work in development of medical devices and techniques to identify, preserve and if necessary reconstruct the nerves that control erectile function during prostate cancer surgery. His research in determining the physical and chemical properties of erectile tissue was recognized. Learn more now.

Pen Bay Ranks in Top 10 Percent Nationally for Quality and Safety
Pen Bay Medical Center ranked in the top ten percent in quality and safety among the more than 1,000 hospitals in 43 states that participated in a 2011 survey by the Leapfrog Group. Pen Bay also ranked fourth out of 37 hospitals in Maine. The Leapfrog survey "2011 Leapfrog Hospital Recognition Program Summary Report" placed Pen Bay in the top tier of hospitals that provide high quality medical care at a low cost. The survey measured hospital performance based on national standards, including common acute conidtions, outcomes for high-risk procedures, hospital-acquired conditions, computerized physician order entry, ICU physician staffing and safe practices as defined by the National Quality Forum.
