Parkinson's Support Group
Announces Fall Programs

The area's Parkinson's Disease Support Group promises continued fellowship and learning this fall, with a series of monthly meetings beginning in September.

The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, from noon to 1:45 p.m., at the Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill Retirement Community in Camden; participation is free and open to all those living with Parkinson's, as well as their family members, friends, and caregivers.

The Sept. 1 meeting will be devoted to a celebration of the support group's fifth anniversary. A new, portable Parkinson's resource library, which will be available at Quarry Hill to group members as well as the public, will be unveiled. In addition, professional writer and honorary group member Cathy Lickteig Makofski will share her written reflections about the group over the past half-decade, and participants will enjoy cake and ice cream.

On Oct. 6, Rockport elder-law attorney David Glasser and a medical social worker from Penobscot Bay Medical Center will explain the often-confusing maze of legal options and documents available for communicating one's wishes concerning health care should one become physically or mentally incapacitated.

The group's Nov. 3 gathering will feature a talk on "Sleep Disturbances in Parkinson's Disease," presented by neurologist Dr. Judd Jensen, MD.

Wrapping up the fall series on Dec. 1, Mary Beth Hill, LSW, a medical social worker at Pen Bay Medical Center, will offer ideas for coping with the depression, anxiety, and stress commonly associated with living with a chronic disease such as Parkinson's.

Support group meetings are free. Attendees are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to each midday meeting; Quarry Hill provides beverages and desserts.
