To The Editor:
During National Nurses Week (May 6-10), Pen Bay Healthcare honored all of the nurses throughout our organization with a week of celebrations. Pen Bay gives special thanks our nurses who are committed to improving the health and quality of life of the people of our community every day.
The weeks’ events held included chair massages, a presentation by Amy Lea and April Totman, nursing scholarship recipients who attended and reported on the 2013 American Nursing Association Nursing Quality Conference, a dedication of the Doug Barnett Simulation Lab and the annual uniform sale sponsored by Super Shoes.
The highlight of this year’s celebration was the reception generously sponsored by the Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees which took place at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. Guest speakers were Nancy Lewis, who spoke to the evolution of professional practice, and Susan Goran, who spoke about Telemedicine: Its History and Its Future. Many thanks to the Foundation’s Holly Miller, Cyndi Clayton and Sherry Gagne for all of their hard work planning and organizing this wonderful event that included the delivery of goodies to Knox, Quarry Hill and Pen Bay Medical Center for all of the staff who were on duty.
In keeping with our tradition, we held a raffle and bake sale to raise money for scholarships to assist those enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. We thank the raffle donors for their generosity: Goose River Golf, E.L. Spear, Rheal Day Spa, Samoset Resort, Eastern Tire & Auto Service, Tropical Nails, and to everyone at Pen Bay who purchased tickets. This year, we raised over $1800 for nursing scholarships.
During this academic year, nursing scholarships were awarded to Casey A. Taber who is attending the University of Maine at Orono, Casy Benner who is attending Berkshire Community College, Brittany Rubenstein who is attending the University of Connecticut, and Kayleigh Marie Beckwith who is also attending the University of Maine at Orono.
We would especially like to thank Marilyn Vinal for organizing and running the Friday bake sale, as well as Cyndi Clayton, Development; Theresa Nizio, Fiscal Services; Patty Kitchen, IT; Kristin Richards, Quarry Hill; Prudy Netzorg, Kno-Wal-Lin; Melissa Sukeforth, Case Management; Kelly Fickett; Nursing Administration and all of the Pen Bay Inpatient nurse managers who helped to sell raffle tickets in their respective units/facilities.
